Diet and Nutrition
Nutrition is fundamental to health, energy, weight and our performance. The diet that we eat impacts directly
on both our health and how we feel. Until very recently, ‘diets’ have been thought of purely as a tool to lose
weight in the short term. However, in the last few years, people are beginning to realise that our diet is a
much more fundamental part of our everyday life. Rather than going on a diet for a few weeks in January and a
few weeks before the summer holiday, many people are aware that good nutrition should be a part of their lifestyle.
The Common SENSE Diet is just that. It is a healthy eating plan for life, not a ‘quick weight loss’ diet plan
that helps you lose a few pounds in the short term, but causes you to struggle with your weight over the years.
The following article illustrates why dieting does not always mean good nutrition.

Weighting for Summer
Summer is here!
I’m sitting in my office looking out to a fantastic summer’s
day, dreaming of being on a beach. At this time of year
thousands of people decide it’s time to go back on a diet to
trim down and get back into our swimming costumes. Summer is a
great time of year, but it’s also dangerous! It’s not just
sunburn or heatstroke that causes us health issues this time
of year. Crash dieting claims most of its unsuspecting victims
in the New Year and early summer. In our desperation to lose a
few pounds in a few weeks, many of us do ourselves long term
harm. It is true, many of us eat more calories than we need to
everyday and this is partly responsible for that steady weight
gain during the year. Most people tend to eat too many
artificial foods and toxins that also play a big part in our
weight gain. However, crash dieting, calorie cutting and the
‘rabbit food diet’ is not the answer! Our body needs nutrition
- really high quality nutrients like proteins, natural fats,
fibre, vitamins and minerals. If we don’t get these,
our health and our weight suffers in the long term.

The term yo-yo dieting refers to those
who lose weight initially and then gain it all back, with
interest. When we crash diet, and reduce the amount of
nutrients we eat, our body goes into a defensive, survival
state. Our hormonal balances change and our fat cells become
more efficient at storing fuel. When we crash diet, we
actually teach our body to store fats! If our body is deprived
of nutrients, from crash dieting or skipping meals, there are
a number of long-term effects on our health. Cancers,
diabetes, osteoporosis and many other major health
disorders have all been linked to lack of nutrients in the diet. Some people are actually over-weight
and malnourished at the same time!

The solution is to eat a diet that is high in nutrients but not too high in calories or toxins. The best way
to do this is to understand what your individual needs are and eat the natural diet that your body needs.
The Common SENSE Diet is perfect for this. If you want to lose weight for your holidays, the best advice
that I can give is to make a commitment to eat a healthy diet for life. By all means, start now (and look
great in that swim suit) but then don’t stop! If you can do this, it will be the last time you ever have to diet.
